The School of Medical Informatics (SMI), formerly the School of Library and Information Science in Medicine (SLISM) was found in 1985. SLISM of hbxhq is one of the four earliest founded departments in China. It took its present name in 2015.
Currently, SMI consists of one administrative office, four teaching sections (Information Science section, Documentation section, Library Science section and Computer Science section), three computer and internet labs. SMI has over 50 faculty members, including 12 full-time staff and 40 from other departments of hbxhq. All the faculty have a master’s degree, an M.D. degree or a Ph.D. degree. There are 3 professors and 7 associate professors, among whom 2 are Ph.D. supervisors and 3 are master supervisors.
SMI provides a 4-year bachelor degree program in medical informatics, a master’s degree program in information science, a doctoral program in health care management and a doctoral program in bioinformatics. In the last 30 years since its established, SMI has trained a large number of MI professionals who are working in the areas of medical information management, computer techniques and applications, medicine, medical journal editing, management science, et al.
SMI has made great progress in education and research. It has got more than 30 grants from National Natural Science Foundation, China Medical Board, Ministry of Education, National Health and Family Planning Commission, Liaoning Province, et al. 300 academic papers were published and over 20 textbooks were compiled. In 2010, SMI gained the prize of Distinctive Specialty of Liaoning province.
